Summary:
Almost Astronauts follows the “Mercury 13,” the original thirteen women who underwent all the testing in order to enter the astronaut training program and have a chance to work and travel in space like their male counterparts.  Though the women had better test scores overall than the men, they were ultimately denied the opportunity to enter the program and make their mark in history.  Their courage and sacrifice in making a stand for women’s rights would eventually pave the way for the women who came behind them to achieve what they could not – women astronauts.

Review:
Slightly thicker and somewhat text-heavy, this book is likely to deter younger readers, and may be more appropriate for older schoolchildren or teens.  Though the writing is relatively engaging, it will probably see more use as a reference book or a project resource than it will as a pleasure read.
