Pages:             205

Summary:
It is bad enough that Spring Pearl has lost both her mother and her father.  But to make matters far worse, she is taken in by an extremely wealthy scholar whose family despises her.  As war with the British threatens China, Spring Pearl must find a way to adapt to her new environment and be of use.  She will soon discover that although she cannot ply a needle, her skills will serve the Sungs when they most desperately need her.  Though she grows to love them as family, eventually the opportunity for freedom may be more than she can resist.

Review:
I found this book slightly superficial as many series fiction books are, but it was an enjoyable and marginally educational read.  A section on life in traditional China can extend readers’ background knowledge and answer some questions they may have from the story.
